The first week at Sana Sana Clinic is officially in the books, and I couldn’t be happier to be back in the exam room, caring for patients again! After months of preparation and anticipation, the experience of opening the clinic’s doors and welcoming patients has been immensely rewarding.
One of my main motivations for opening Sana Sana Clinic was to practice medicine in the way I believe we all deserve: personalized, patient-centered, and free from the constraints of rushed visits. This past week, I’ve finally been able to experience just that. In medical school at Boston University, I learned the practice of “open-ended” interviewing, a skill that encourages patients to direct the conversation according to their own needs and concerns. It was also emphasized strongly during my residency training. However, the realities of insurance-based primary care with its packed schedules and limited appointment times often made fully practicing this skill challenging.
This week, I’ve found myself once again fully embracing open-ended conversations. Visits scheduled for an hour have allowed conversations with patients to feel natural, unhurried, and truly conversational, providing the opportunity to connect more deeply and meaningfully. The additional time has not only allowed me to revisit and fully utilize essential clinical skills, but it’s also clearly improved patient care. Longer visits mean we can delve deeper into underlying health issues, explore preventive strategies, and discuss lifestyle and wellness topics that typically get glossed over in rushed appointments. The result is care that feels more thoughtful, thorough, and satisfying, for both my patients and myself.
This level of personalized attention is made possible by Sana Sana Clinic’s direct primary care (DPC) model. Free from insurance-imposed restrictions, our clinic can focus purely on patient needs. Appointments lasting 30-90 minutes, same-day or next-day scheduling, and direct communication all highlight the patient-first philosophy that drew me to direct primary care in the first place. This first week is only the beginning. My commitment is to remain accessible, responsive, and genuinely connected to my patients. With a limited patient panel, I’ll be able to maintain the personalized attention that defines the experience at Sana Sana Clinic.
